Vapers tongue: what is it?

What Is Vaper's Tongue?

Vaper's tongue is a common experience where a person temporarily loses the ability to taste their e-liquid. It typically lasts between one and three days, but can occasionally persist for up to two weeks. It does not affect nicotine absorption or vapour production — only the perception of flavour.

Why Does It Happen?

There are a few common causes:

Dry Mouth

Taste buds require saliva to function properly. Vaping can sometimes contribute to a dry mouth, which reduces the ability to taste. Staying well hydrated can help address this.

Flavour Fatigue

The olfactory system (sense of smell) plays a significant role in flavour perception — accounting for up to 70% of how we experience taste. When exposed to the same aroma repeatedly, the olfactory system can become temporarily desensitised to it. This is why vapers who use the same e-liquid flavour continuously may find it becomes harder to taste over time.

Recent Smoking

If you have recently stopped smoking, your sense of taste and smell may still be recovering. This can take time, but generally improves the longer you go without smoking.

Ways to Address Vaper's Tongue

  • Drink more water — staying hydrated supports saliva production and taste bud function
  • Rotate your e-liquid flavours — switching between different flavours can help prevent olfactory fatigue
  • Take a break from vaping — giving your senses a short rest can help reset flavour perception
  • Smell something neutral — smelling coffee beans or fresh ground coffee is a commonly used method to reset the olfactory sense between flavours
  • Reduce caffeine and alcohol — both can contribute to dehydration and dry mouth
  • Use an oral hydration product — products designed to address dry mouth (such as oral sprays or rinses) may provide temporary relief
  • Check your coil — an old or burnt coil can affect flavour. If your coil needs replacing, this may be contributing to a muted or unpleasant taste
  • Clean your tank — residue from previous e-liquids can affect the taste of a new flavour. Rinse your tank with warm water and allow it to dry fully before refilling

Vaper's tongue is a temporary and common experience. If it persists for an extended period or you have other concerns, it is worth speaking with a healthcare professional.
