Vapes and Flying

Can You Travel with a Vape on a Plane?

Yes, but there are specific rules you need to follow. Vaping devices and lithium batteries must be carried in your carry-on luggage or on your person — they cannot be packed in checked baggage. This is a worldwide aviation rule with no exceptions, due to fire safety concerns in aircraft cargo holds.

The information in this article is a general guide. Rules may vary between airlines, so it is always best to check with your specific airline before travelling. If you are travelling internationally, also check the vaping laws of your destination country, as vaping is prohibited in some countries.

Travelling with Vaping Devices and Batteries

  • All vaping devices and spare lithium batteries must be in your carry-on luggage or pockets — not in checked baggage
  • If carrying spare removable batteries, keep them in a dedicated plastic battery case to prevent accidental short circuits
  • Cabin pressure changes can cause tanks to leak — it is advisable to empty your tank before boarding, or ensure it is only partially filled
  • Do not use your vaping device on the aircraft — this is prohibited on all commercial flights

Travelling with E-Liquid

E-liquid carried in your carry-on luggage is subject to the standard aviation liquids rule: all liquids must be in containers of 100mL or less, and must fit within a single transparent resealable bag (typically 1 litre capacity). This applies to all liquids including e-liquid.

E-liquid in your checked baggage is generally permitted, but it is advisable to seal bottles in a zip-lock bag to prevent leakage from pressure changes.

Nicotine Regulations at Your Destination

Nicotine e-liquid regulations vary by country. Some countries have strict limits on nicotine concentration, and others prohibit nicotine e-liquid entirely. If you are travelling internationally, research the regulations of your destination before departing. Attempting to bring nicotine e-liquid into a country where it is prohibited can result in confiscation or legal consequences.

Vaping Laws in New Zealand

In New Zealand, vaping is regulated under the Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Act. Vaping is prohibited in smokefree areas. For more information, visit our 2025 Regulations page.
