Vaping & E-Liquid — Frequently Asked Questions
What is e-liquid?
E-liquid (also known as vape juice) is the liquid used in vaping devices. It is heated by a coil to produce vapour. E-liquid is typically made from vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), food-grade flavour concentrates, and optionally nicotine. At 2020 Vapes, our handcrafted NZ e-liquids use high-grade VG and PG bases.
How do I use e-liquid?
How you fill your device depends on the type of device you have. Most tanks are filled via a fill port on the side or top of the tank. Pod systems may use refillable pods or pre-filled pods that are replaced when empty. Always refer to your device's instruction manual for the correct filling method.
Does vaping produce smoke?
No. Vaping produces vapour, not smoke. Vapour is created by heating e-liquid — there is no combustion involved. The vapour dissipates more quickly than cigarette smoke.
Does e-liquid contain nicotine?
E-liquid is available both with and without nicotine. Nicotine-containing e-liquid is regulated in New Zealand and may only be sold to people aged 18 and over by licensed retailers. Nicotine concentration is measured in milligrams per millilitre (mg/mL).
How long does e-liquid last?
How long e-liquid lasts depends on how frequently you vape and the type of device you use. Higher-powered sub-ohm devices use more e-liquid per draw than lower-powered pod systems. Usage can vary significantly between individuals.
How long does a vaping device battery last?
Battery life depends on the battery capacity (measured in milliampere-hours, or mAh), the resistance of your coil, and how frequently you use your device. Higher-powered devices draw more current and will deplete the battery faster. Most devices will indicate when the battery needs charging.
Are vaping devices allowed in public places in NZ?
Under New Zealand law, vaping is prohibited in smokefree areas, which include many indoor public spaces, workplaces, schools, and certain outdoor areas. The 2025 regulation updates expanded smokefree area requirements. Always check the rules of the specific location you are in. As a general guide, if smoking is not permitted in a location, vaping is likely also not permitted.
How do I maintain my vaping device?
Regular maintenance helps keep your device performing correctly. Coils will need to be replaced periodically — signs that a coil needs replacing include a burnt taste or reduced vapour production. When replacing a coil, it is good practice to clean the tank with warm water and allow it to dry fully before reassembling. Do not submerge the battery or mod in water.
