Battery Safety - 2020 Vapes

Battery Safety

Vaping batteries are safe when used and maintained correctly. The following information is intended to help you understand how to care for your batteries properly.

If you have any concerns about your battery or device, please contact us or visit us in store.

Built-in Batteries

Many vaping devices have a built-in (integrated) battery that cannot be removed. These are charged via a USB cable supplied with the device.

Key safety tips for built-in batteries:

  • Use the correct charger — always use the cable supplied with your device and connect it to a suitable wall plug. Do not use high-amp fast chargers (such as those used for fast-charging smartphones). The amp output of your wall plug should be no more than 1–2 amps — check your device manual for the correct specification.
  • Do not overcharge — most modern devices have an auto shut-off function, but it is still good practice to remove your device from charge once it is full.
  • Store safely — keep your device away from flammable materials and out of direct sunlight. Avoid leaving it in hot environments such as a car on a warm day.
  • Handle with care — dropping your device can cause internal damage. A silicone sleeve or protective case can help minimise the risk of damage.
  • Use authentic products — counterfeit or clone devices may lack the safety features present in genuine products. 2020 Vapes sells only authentic products.

Removable Batteries

Some vaping devices use removable rechargeable battery cells, most commonly 18650 or 21700 size batteries. These offer the advantage of being replaceable when they lose capacity over time.

Key safety tips for removable batteries:

  • Use an external battery charger — while some devices support on-board charging via USB, a dedicated external charger is safer and extends the life of both your batteries and your device. Check your device manual to confirm whether USB charging is supported — some USB ports on devices are for firmware updates only.
  • Inspect batteries regularly — check the outer wrap of your batteries for any tears, nicks, or damage. A damaged wrap should be repaired with a battery wrap or the battery should be replaced. Do not use a battery with a damaged wrap.
  • Use a battery case when travelling — never carry loose batteries in your pocket alongside metal objects such as keys or coins. Contact between battery terminals and metal objects can cause a short circuit. Always use a dedicated plastic battery case.
  • Do not mix batteries — if your device uses two or more batteries, always use matched pairs from the same manufacturer and keep them together as a set.
  • Store correctly — store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

General Battery Safety

  • Never leave any charging device unattended for extended periods
  • Do not charge devices overnight
  • If a battery becomes hot, swells, or emits an unusual smell, stop using it immediately and dispose of it safely at a battery recycling point
  • Keep batteries and devices out of reach of children
